Running Linktator

Type in the url to the linktator script in your browser.

Quick start guide ... [details]

You can either (1) have the linktator script spider a page (recommended) or (2) type in the urls that you want to rotate.

The spider only grabs the links and anchor text from one page - it does NOT follow those links looking for more links.  The best use of this function is to spider a sitemap page (you do have a site map page, don't you?) that has hundreds or even thousands of links.

If you type in the urls (or paste them in), add urls in this format (ONE URL PER LINE) to the text box.

http://www.example.com/link1.html
http://www.example.com/link2.html
http://www.example.com/link3.html

This format will display "link1" as the anchor text for

http://www.example.com/link1.html

OR, in this format:

http://www.example.com/link1.html,keyword1
http://www.example.com/link2.html,keyword2
http://www.example.com/link3.html,keyword3

This format will display "keyword1" as the anchor text for http://www.example.com/link1.html

Note: urls need to be absolute urls and not relative urls ... [details]
Once you have loaded urls into the text box, click on "add".

Next, click on "displaying urls".

Choose a separator to use and the number of links to display and click "create_link"  -  OR   -  simply click "create_link".

Make sure the links display properly by clicking on the generated link (looks something like this:  http://www.example.com/linktator/linktator.php?num=3 ).

Once you know the links are displaying properly, copy the code snippet found in the text box.  Paste this code into your php pages OR your php enabled html pages (contact your technical support for help).

Note well Linktator code is locked, i.e. - you can't make changes to the code.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start over and get rid of all the links?

Delete the control.txt and all of the *_mydomains_project.txt files from the directory that linktator is in.

If I just insert a URL ito the box & click "add" (after already spidering a sitemap) will it be able to pull the title & info as well, when the "added" URL is displayed?

Only the spidering does that.

Notice that when you spider a page, the information that is returned looks like this:

http://www.example.com/keyword1.html,anchor text1

http://www.example.com/keyword2.html,anchor text2

http://www.example.com/keyword3.html,anchor text3

If you want to add additional urls like you suggested, the best way is to add the url and anchor text that you want in the same format as the spidered results.

If you just add an url, then the anchor text will come from the url. For instance, the anchor text for:

http://www.example.com/keyword1.html

will be "keyword1".

When I run linktator's index.php, I get this 500 error:
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

It's possible your server will not allow directories to have permission 0777, try 0755 instead.

What do I have to do to make sure the linktator code works on .htm or .html pages?

In the root directory of your server (typically public_html), you need to add one of the two following lines to your .htaccess file.

AddType application/x-httpd-php .htm .html (recommended)

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html
